Learn more →Competa's rural mountain setting means properties are exposed to a range of pests that thrive in agricultural and wooded surroundings. The vine estates, olive groves and almond orchards that surround the village attract wasps, hornets and a wide variety of insects throughout the growing season, while rodents exploit the barns, outbuildings and food stores common in rural properties.
Many properties in and around Competa are owned by British and German expats who spend part of the year here, leaving properties unoccupied for extended periods. This creates ideal conditions for infestations to establish undetected — particularly rodents in outbuildings and wasps in roof voids and eaves. Professional preventative treatments and pre-season inspections are highly recommended.
Competa sits at around 640 metres, below the peaks of the Sierra Almijara and surrounded by Moscatel vineyards and almond groves. Its mountain climate means a different set of pests from the coast, and different timing too.
Winters in Competa are noticeably cooler than in Nerja or Torrox Costa, so the heavy coastal cockroach pressure is lower. Instead, rodents become the main issue, as rats and mice move into houses looking for warmth from October onwards. Wasps are very active through the long dry summers, and scorpions live in the dry stone walls that line the terraces.
Pine processionary caterpillars are another local concern. Their silk nests appear in pine trees in late winter, and the caterpillars' hairs can seriously harm dogs that sniff them.
Many of the properties around Competa are fincas reached by dirt tracks towards Canillas de Albaida, Archez and Sayalonga. Water deposits, irrigation ponds and pools hold standing water that breeds mosquitoes, and outbuildings, wood stores and stables give rodents shelter.
