Along Ferrara beach and the promenade, most apartment blocks have restaurants, cafes and bars on the ground floor. Kitchens, bin rooms and the flats above share drain risers and service ducts, which is the perfect route for German cockroaches to spread from one property to the next.

When we treat here, we look at the whole route, not just the flat that called us. We also advise community presidents on treating the shared areas, so the problem does not simply move upstairs. More on our cockroach control page.

Urbanisations and communal pools

Hillside urbanisations such as El Penoncillo, Calaceite, Torrox Park and Laguna Beach have communal gardens, pools and drip-irrigated planting. Tiger mosquitoes breed in the smallest pools of standing water, Argentine ant supercolonies spread across whole gardens, and rats live in the planted banks between terraces.

Around El Faro and the Roman remains

The streets around the lighthouse and the Roman villa site mix older low-rise houses with gardens and newer apartment buildings. Mature gardens and older drains mean American cockroaches, rodents and wasp nests in roof spaces are more common here than in the newer blocks.

A year-round community

Unlike some resorts, Torrox Costa has a large community of residents who live here all year, alongside a busy holiday rental market. Pests do not stop in winter either. Rodents move indoors from October, and cockroaches stay active in heated kitchens and drains.
